Experience Naples History and Visit these Museums

Naples, Florida, is one of the state’s most well-kept secrets. This incredible city offers all the fun and sun you’d expect from a beach getaway while remaining much less crowded than destinations like Panama City or Orlando. You’ll find beautiful beaches, unique shops, and delicious restaurants, but perhaps the most intriguing element of Naples is the rich history.

If you need to escape the heat or just want to learn something new, Naples and the surrounding areas have plenty of museums and historical sites for you to explore. These exciting spots are some of the best family-friendly activities Naples has to offer. Here are three of our favorite Naples museums.

Collier County Museum

Collier County actually has five museums, two of which are located in Naples: the Collier Museum at Government Center and the Naples Depot Museum. The former is the flagship location, offering visitors five acres to explore. You’ll learn all about the native Floridian people, the Calusa Indians, as well as other settlers and the hard journeys they faced. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy before you discover the archaeology lab, the gardens, restored cottages, and so much more.

At the Naples Depot Museum, you’ll get to experience the history of the Roaring Twenties amid the backdrop of the restored Seaboard Air Line Railway station. The vast development of Florida’s transportation system comes to life in interactive exhibits and fun sights like a mule wagon and rail cars! Both museums are open daily and are free to enter.

The Baker Museum

One of the most popular Naples museums is The Baker Museum, housing some of the finest contemporary artwork in the area. The museum holds a combination of permanent collections and rotating exhibitions to ensure something new and exciting every time you come! Various events are held throughout the year, including artist talks, community days, and interactive make-and-take programs. It’s no wonder that The Baker Museum is a favorite attraction of locals and tourists alike!

The Baker Museum is the perfect addition to Naples beach vacations, bringing a unique and fun element into your usual activities. The museum’s hours change depending on the season, so be sure to check their website. Admission is $10 for adults, and children aged 17 and under are free.

Naples Historical Society

The Naples Historical Society’s slogan perfectly represents their mission: “Preserve Naples history, one member, one tour, one child, one party, one event at a time!” The Society has frequent gatherings and activities aiming to bring the area’s history to life. They offer walking tours of the city and have an incredible museum at the Historic Palm Cottage. Built in 1895, this 3,500-square foot house holds artwork both donated and original, as well as tools and other furnishings. This is the perfect place to experience the “Old Naples” charm and learn some of the many stories and facts that keep the region close to its history.

Tours of Historic Palm Cottage require no reservation and are held every Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is $13 for adults and is free for children 10 and under. Your tour will last approximately 40 minutes and will include a guided walk-through of the Cottage and a self-guided tour of the Norris Gardens.

Of all the things to do in Naples, exploring the museums and historical sites is one of your best options. There is something for everyone to enjoy, even if you’re not a huge history buff. Everywhere you turn, you will find something new to learn about the people and events that made the area the rich and exciting city that it is today.
